AHM began with a 2023 Detroit happy-hour event seeking to connect housing affordability advocates across the state for the first time. Today, we’re joining hands with organizations across the state to make affordable housing a reality.

Michigan Needs more housing

The price of housing is increasing across the United States.
Michigan can avoid this crisis if we can change land-use rules and permitting processes to allow for more new housing.

Legalize Housing

Due to a complex web of housing and land-use laws, it is illegal to build more housing in many of our communities that need it the most. We need to legalize the construction of more types of housing in our cities, towns, and communities to help tackle the affordability crisis.

Reform Permitting

Even when the construction of housing is happening, the process is weighed down by a legal permitting processes that can take years and millions of dollars. Speeding up this process can dramatically reduce the legal and administrative costs of building more housing.

Prioritize In-Fill and Adaptive Re-Use

Empty lots, shuttered buildings, and under-utilized blocks in our cities’ highest demand neighborhoods are full of untapped potential to bring more housing, economic development, and community vibrancy. Allowing them to be re-developed for the next generation is key to housing abundance in Michigan.
